Journalism and Mass Communication

Sister Nivedita University is the oldest and largest media college in East India, both in terms of state-of-the-art infrastructure, state-of-the-art laboratories, and classrooms. With the popularity of digital media,  entry of more news channels and media companies, we will witness the rapid expansion of the mass communication industry in the next five years. This provides many career opportunities for young and energetic applicants who want to enter the field.

 Our courses are built with a combination of theoretical and practical learning. In addition to classroom lectures, students also receive training during weekly outdoor assignments, industry training, photo walks, foreign language training, etc.

SNU believes in the holistic all-round development of students to work in a fast-paced and challenging environment. Students are highly trained, according to their SWOT analysis mapping on mojo journalism and news television broadcasting, marketing communication and corporate communication, photography, public relations, audio and video production, film production, digital marketing, live broadcast production, printing and publishing, digital design and motion graphics, animation 3D and 2D with VFX.

With the growing importance of today's media industry, many opportunities exist in this field. Students are put on compulsory multitasking training so that they are industry-ready and can adapt to the fast-paced and challenging environment when placed. Our mentored seminars provide weekly industry training classes where stalwarts from the industry take sessions and share experiences with the young minds. The university also has many international alliance programs for student exchange programs, which is a great way to experience different educational styles, expand employment opportunities, and make students more focused on their careers.

In addition to placement services provided by SNU placement cell, the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication provides training & placement opportunities to all its students right from the beginning. No wonder even 1st-year students get an internship and work opportunities with organizations like AAJKAL, The Statesman, Weber Shandwick, Pratidin Prakashini, Selvel, SVF, Carpe Diem, Taaza Tv, Zee News, AAJ TAK, ETV Bharat, MIRROR NOW, Wizcraft International, DNA, Reliance, Times of India, etc. Students are also off­ered international placement support on basis of their academic performance and industry training report.

1ST Class fourth in Masters from Rabindra Bharati University in Mass Communication and Videography. She is a Political Science Graduate from Bethune College. She is now Pursuing her Doctoral degree from St Xavier’s University, Kolkata.

She has worked over 14 years in Audio Visual Journalism in various Channels including Etv, Kolkata TV, News Time and News 18. She was the Deputy Chief Copy Editor in News 18 for 4 years. In 2018 she began focusing into Media Education. She was the Visiting Faculty at Roopkala Kendra in Audio Visual Journalism. She is the training program organizing member and the member of the Magazine team of Indian Science news Associations.

She is now the Assistant Professor and Head in the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism. She is the core member of the Examination conduct Committee and former Examination Coordinator of the Department.

Her Domain is Audio Visual Journalism, Film-Script Writing and Cultural Studies.

Arindam Basu

Masters from University of Calcutta in Journalism and Mass Communication

A topper in Masters from University of Calcutta in Journalism and Mass Communication, he is an English Honours graduate from St Xavier’s College. A recipient of the Santosh Kr Ghosh Memorial Award, he has worked for over 15 years in media in various houses including United News of India, NewsX and Sports Illustrated. In 2010 he started his boutique PR Agency Carpe Diem Communique Pvt. Ltd. In 2020 he began focusing completely into academics, though he had been a visiting lecturer at University of Calcutta, Women’s College among other institutions for over a decade.

He is now a Senior Faculty in the Journalism and Mass Com Dept. here at Sister Nivedita University. Reporting, editing, advertising and public relations are his core papers.

He is a published author with three books to his name—a personal memoir on Calcutta named Millennium Memories, a collection of short stories named Everything You Never Expected and an academic book The Reporter which he co-authored with Sujoy Dhar. He has also been featured in a sports anthology—The Best of Indian Sports Writing.

THE SNU POST

THE SNU POST

THE SNU POST” an initiative by students and faculty members of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism. “THE SNU POST” is a monthly free digital publication with limited copies, of printed versions available on a subscription basis. With newspaper being the earliest form of mass media the experience that “The SNU POST” caters is itself invaluable. With this, we officially have started our ‘Student’s Press’ that provides hands-on training for students specializing in Print and Cyber Journalism.

SNU REEL

Sister Nivedita University, Department of Journalism and Mass Communication runs its very own campus Television Channel “SNU REEL”. At present, SNU REEL is available on social media like Facebook and YouTube. The main objective of SNU REEL is to create a platform for students so that they can get their hands-on training and can be more competent when they go for industrial training and Jobs. The SNU REEL was a vision of our Honourable Chancellor who has always believed in beyond classroom teaching and training so that students feel confident and become successful media entrepreneurs and industry professionals.

SNU RADIO

SNU RADIO is a digital radio station run by the students of the media department. It is more of a practical training setup for the students to explore and learn. Student records their programs and broadcasts 24 hours a day as they deliver music, news, talk, and dramas. Some of the most popular shows are, Someone is listening, Spotlight, Tridhara, Voice It, Rhythm Nation.
 

THE SNU CHRONICLE

THE SNU CHRONICLE

The SNU Chronicle is a self-initiative of the university to promote students' creativity and provide a platform to showcase their talents. It will also serve as a platform in teaching how to write and publish news and will include radio podcasts, live sessions, SNU TV, and all other activities involving the students of SNU. Also, apart from just being a mobile application, it is a web portal and that makes it the most interesting. It will include different tabs dedicated to the various online and offline programs of the university.

1. While surfing the application, one will come across a news portal that will contain news articles (International and National) and different event coverages by the students of SNU. The most notable among them will be “The Humans of Kolkata”, which will come up with the superlative and life-changing stories of different individuals of Kolkata who have excelled excellently in their lives and have inspired many.

2. The “SNU Post” tab will consist of all the amazing articles and posts prepared by the students of the university's various departments.

3. The “SNU Reel” (SNU TV) tab will serve as an online video-sharing platform where the different works of the students will be regularly posted.

4. The “SNU Radio” tab will be solely dedicated to the different radio sessions that will be organized from time to time in the university's own radio station, often featuring noteworthy personalities.

5. And last but not least, the last tab- “Our Team” will introduce the backbones of the application, i.e. its students, who will work day and night to keep us updated and provide us with the most amazing and genuine content.
