Professor (Dr.) Madhuchhanda Roy Choudhury

Head of Department of English

Prof. Roy Choudhury completed her education from St. Xavier’s College, Jadavpur University, and Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, USA. She has previously been Assistant Professor at Amity University and St. Xavier’s University in Kolkata, before taking over as our Head of Department. Her research interests include the British novel of the long 18th century, the long 18th century in Britain, the Gothic novel, Monsters and Monstrosity.

Professor Monikinkini Basu

Assistant Professor, Department of English

Prof. Basu is on the verge of completing her PhD from the internationally-renowned Centre for the Studies in Social Sciences, Kolkata, having previously studied at the University of Kalyani. She has been teaching since 2013, with her time divided between Sri Krishna College under the University of Kalyani and The Bhawanipore Education Society. Her teaching and research interests include drama, performance studies, masculinity studies and film studies.

Dr. Prasanta Ghoshal

Visiting Faculty, Department of English

Dr. Ghoshal completed both MPhil and PhD from Rabindra Bharati University. With over a decade’s teaching experience, his first commitment has always been to his students at Sir Gurudas Mahavidyalaya under the University of Calcutta, but he also holds appointments the Netaji Subhash Open University and the Dept of Open and Distance Learning, University of Kalyani. His teaching and research interests include Partition literature, trauma studies, Foucauldian studies, crisis psychology and tribal gender studies.

Ms. Sudesha Das

Visiting Faculty, Department of English

Ms. Das have degrees from Govt. College and the West Bengal State University and is buttressed with a B.Ed. From Satyapriya Roy College. She immediately took the plunge into teaching after graduating from her B. Ed in 2018, and has been a rock-solid part of our department at Sister Nivedita University ever since. Her teaching and research interests include Tagore studies, women’s writing in Colonial Bengal and broader gender studies, and Indian mythological literature.

Mr. Arkaprabha Chakraborty

Visiting Faculty, Department of English

Mr. Chakraborty spent five years being introduced to the subject at Jadavpur University before pursuing his MPhil from the University of Oxford. He hopes to make up in enthusiasm what he lacks in experience, having only started teaching the subject since 2019. He is currently also a Guest Lecturer at St. Xavier’s University. His research interests include medieval literature, manuscript studies, Modernist literature and theory, psychoanalysis and literature, postcolonial studies and art history

Prof. (Dr.) Bula Bhadra

Head of Department of Sociology

Prof. (Dr.) Bula Bhadra, an alumnus of Presidency College and University of Calcutta completed her M.A. & PhD from McMaster University, Canada where she taught for 3 years as Assistant Professor. She joined Dept of Sociology, University of Calcutta and taught for 28 years. Prof. Bhadra was a Visiting Professor in the Dept. of Humanities & Social Sciences, Indian Institute Engineering, Science and Technology, Shibpur, West Bengal, India. At present she is the Professor and Head of Dept. of Sociology at Sister Nivedita University, New Town. Her research interest and areas of specialization includes Post colonial theory, Sociology of gender, Sociology of childhood, and Sociology of Science and Technology. She has published extensively on Gender and Childhood, Gender and Technology, both nationally and internationally. Her first book entitled Materialist Orientalism: Marx, ‘Asiatic’ Mode of Production and India is internationally accredited. She has written in both Vernacular and English. She has supervised 14 PhDs and 16 MPhil on Gender, Childhood, Police and Correctional Institution. She has been awarded several major and minor projects by UGC & ICSSR.

Ms. Anusuya Moitra

Ms. Anusuya Moitra has graduated in Sociology from Basanti Devi College, Kolkata in 2015 thereafter completing Master’s degree in the discipline from Dept. of Sociology, University of Calcutta in 2017. She also qualified the UGC-NET in 2018. She is pursuing her Ph.D from Department of Sociology, Jadavpur University, under supervision of Prof. (Dr.) Piyali Sur. She is currently working as a part-time faculty in Dept. of Sociology, Sister Nivedita University also as a Guest Faculty in Muralidhar Girls’ College, Kolkata. Apart from teaching she takes an active interest in research, and charitable activities, her areas of interest are Sociology of Crime & Deviance, Sociology of Childhood & Sociology of (Dis) ability.

Ms. Sanchita Gangopadhyay

Part-time Faculty, Department of Sociology

Ms. Gangopadhyay pursued her graduation degree in Sociology (Hons.) from Jogamaya Devi College, University of Calcutta. She has successfully completed her Masters degree in Sociology from Calcutta University. Ms. Gangopadhyay is the recipient of the Radhakamal Mukherjee Young Social Scientist Award, 2017. She is currently working as a part- time faculty at Sister Nivedita University and as a guest-faculty at The Heritage College, Kolkata. She has an experience of working as a Head of the Department of Sociology at Loreto College and has served as a guest-lecturer at Asutosh College, Kolkata. She also has an experience of working as a field assistant on a National Project titled ‘Promoting Micro Solar Dome Technology in Tribal Pockets of India with Different Agro-Climatic Condition & Varied Type of Housing’ conducted by NB Institute of Rural Technology under the supervision of Prof. S.P Gonchaudhury & Prof. (Dr.) Bula Bhadra in 2017 & 2018. Her areas of interest are Sociology Childhood & Youth and Sociology of Crime and Deviance.

Dr. Navin Kumar Jha

HOD, DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS

A graduate with first class degree in Economics Honors from TNB college, Bhagalpur, Dr. Jha had his Post graduate and Ph D from BRA Ambedkar Bihar University. Dr. Jha has a total of 20 years of teaching experience at degree and Masters level in different prestigious institutions. He served for more than a decade in Royal University of Bhutan, where he received Civil Service award of Royal Government of Bhutan in 2015. Prior to joining Sister Nivedita University, he served as an Associate Professor in the Department of Economics, Christ University, Bangalore. His research interest and areas of specialization include Public Policy, Macro Economics, Economic History and Health Economics. He has published 19 research papers in national and International reputed peer reviewed journals. He has presented 14 research papers in national and international Seminars and conferences. He has also authored a book on Problem of Child Labor. Dr. Jha has supervised research work of Post-Graduation and MPhil students. He has also developed curriculum of Economics Honors and MA Economics for Sherubtse College, Royal University of Bhutan.

Dr. Pradip Chouhan

Assistant Professor, Department of Economics

Pradip Chouhan had his Post Graduate degree from the Department of Economics, Tripura University, securing a first-class first position. He is UGC- NET qualified (2013). He has also obtained his Ph.D. degree from the Economics department, Tripura University, where he worked as a guest faculty before joining the Department of Economics, Sister Nivedita University, Kolkata. Along with teaching, he worked on various research projects as a research assistant. Furthermore, he has numerous research articles in his credit published in UGC listed and peer review journals. His areas of research interest are Agricultural, Labour, North-East, and Development Economics.

Dr. Kalpita Ray

Dr. Kalpita Ray is a UGC NET qualified scholar (2018) and has been awarded with a PhD in Industrial Economics from University of Kalyani, West Bengal in 2019. She has completed her Masters in Economics (with specialization in Econometrics) from Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata (2011) and has pursued her Graduation as B.Sc (H) in Economics from University of Calcutta (2009). Her area of research interest includes Democracy and Labour Economics besides Industrial Economics. She has accomplished a couple of research-cum-publication work on the issues of right of Muslim women in India in some reputed journals and edited books. She has also actively participated and presented key research papers in different conferences among top institutions. Before joining Sister Nivedita University, she had worked as a Guest Lecturer in Dept. of Economics in Bangabasi College, Kolkata (2012-2016), covering wide range of topics among students in different streams (Hons. and Pass course).

Dr. Gopa Ghosh

Dr. Gopa Ghosh had joined Sister Nivedita University in September, 2019. She received the degree B.Sc. (Hons.) in Economics from Bidhannagar College in 2007 and pursued her M. Sc. from the Department of Economics, Calcutta University in 2009. She has done M.Phil from Jadavpur University (2012) under the guidance of Prof. Joyashree Roy and her research work was on Status of Mitigation Strategies of Manufacturing Industries for West Bengal. She is UGC- NET qualified. She has done her PhD Degree under the guidance of Prof. Madhumati Dutta from the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur in April, 2019 and the title of her thesis is “Using Decomposition Analysis to Determine the Causes of the Increased Use of Energy in Production: A Case Study of West Bengal”. She has also published research papers in different peer reviewed journals and edited book till date and presented her research paper in national and international seminars. She has the knowledge of database of official statistics; CSO database, National Industrial Classification Code (NIC), database of Energy Statistics, Census of India, RBI database, database of Statistical Abstract and Statistical Handbook of West Bengal and India. Her research interest includes Energy Economics and climate change and Environmental Economics.
