With the aim to soon emerge as flagship courses for the university, the inaugural programs for Bachelor’s in Architecture (B. Arch) and Bachelor’s in Planning (B. Plan) are being launched by the School of Architecture and Planning (SAP) at Sister Nivedita University (SNU). Approved by the Council of Architecture (CoA), New Delhi and Indian Town Planning Institute (ITPI), New Delhi, the courses will impart essential, critical, and industry based practical knowledge to its students.

Bachelor Degree in Architecture (B.Arch)

Designed as a curriculum that simultaneously anchors itself in theory and innovates from praxis, the 5-years B. Arch program critically examines subjects ranging from architectural design studios to architectural history and cultural studies, ergonomics to building structures and construction technologies, computer graphics to environmental studies and climatology among an array of other topics. The course is designed to be an immersive, interactive, and hands-on experience for students, through the use of pedagogic methods that include interactive and graphically interpreted design studios, computer applications in design, hands on model making and skills development workshops, audio visual lecture sessions and presentations, visits to construction sites, educational tours to critically observe architecture and culture, primary and secondary research, learning through conferences and workshops, training and placement with an architectural firm for a period of six months, culminating with a design thesis in the final semester.

Bachelor Degree in Planning (B.Plan)

The 4-years B. Plan program, first time in Eastern India after Delhi and other cities, is aimed to meet the growing demand for urban planners in India, and strategized to contribute to the ongoing national shift from a primarily rural to majorly urban societies. Driven by technology, while also maintaining the core values of community and place-making, the curricula as well as teaching system is designed to be a model program, matching international standards, with students being equipped with the knowledge of basic theories, techniques, and design concepts so that they can assume their assigned professional roles as members of multi-disciplinary teams for survey, analysis and plan preparation in the area of urban planning, development and management, housing, transport planning, infrastructure planning, environmental planning, conservation planning or in other related disciplines, to serve in various professional capacities in planning, development and management agencies in the public sector as well as private consultancy organizations. The course curriculum of this programme is spread over eight semesters during which time students attain proficiency in designing and managing projects of all magnitudes from micro level unit design to the macro level regional development planning supplemented with 12 weeks of off-campus professional work in a planning office. The programme culminates in the eighth semester in a thesis presentation whereby a student is trained in research methodologies.

Manish Chakraborti is a architect, urban planner, Professor in Architecture and is one of the leading conservation architect whose works has been widely published in the national and international journals and media. He has authored various books on architecture and conservation, guided students thesis, a guest columnist, a visiting faculty to schools of architecture in India and former Associate Professor at Amity School of Architecture, Kolkata.

He has a graduation in Architecture from Jadavpur University, and Masters in Urban Planning from Indian Institute of Technology and Conservation from University of York in the UK. He has been awarded Fellowships from Charles Wallace Trust, Indian Foundation for the Arts, (IFA) Bangalore, Geothe Institute, Germany, Cultural Trade Delegation of Italian Government and Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands wherein he undertook intensive training and delivered lectures in conservation planning, strategies and techniques.

Member of professional bodies like Indian Institute of Architects, Indian Town Planning Institute, International Council of Monuments and Sites and an invited member of the Heritage Committee of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, he has been a consultant to World Monuments Fund, National Museum of Denmark, Asian Development Bank, Department of Culture, Government of Rajasthan, INTACH, and Archaeological Survey of India.

He is the recipient of the Unesco Asia Pacific Heritage Award of Distinction 2016 for the Conservation of St Olav Church amongst 40 entries from Asia Pacific region for bench marking conservation practice in India and the region. He was been conferred with Society Interiors Honours Award in 2017 for two decades of architecture conservation advice and practice in India.
