Dr. Arup Kumar Chattopadhyay has more than 39 years of teaching/research experience in different academic institutions and also has professional experience at managerial level in banking industry. Currently he is serving Sister Nivedita University, Kolkata in the capacity of Emeritus Professor after his retirement from the substantive post of Professor of Economics at the University of Burdwan (where he served as Professor since November 2006, i.e., for more than 16 years). Formerly he was the Head of the Department of Economics at the University of Burdwan, West Bengal, India. He also served the University of Burdwan in the capacity of Dean, Faculty of Arts, Commerce, Law etc. for nearly five years. He initially joined to the post of Reader in Commerce at the University in March 2000 and became the Head of the Department of Commerce, B.U.
Chattopadhyay started his career in 1982 at Punjab National Bank as Management Trainee (popularly known as Probationary Officer) and developed expertise in operations management in banking. From October 1983 to December 1994 he served as Lecturer/ Senior Lecturer in Economics at two Under Graduate Colleges of West Bengal, namely Ashutosh College, Kolkata and V.S. Mahavidyalaya, Manikpara. He then joined the Department of Commerce at Vidyasagar University, Midnapore in December 1994 as Senior Lecturer (and subsequently promoted to the post of Reader) in Commerce. His total teaching experience at University level is more than 28 years and as a teacher his ratings by the students always remained very high. In teaching he has developed his Core Competence in the areas like, • Financial Economics, • Mathematical Economics, • Econometrics and Statistics, • Public Finance and • Operations Research.
Dr. Chattopadhyay also performed different administrative activities in the institutions of higher learning. He was the member of Governing Bodies of different Under Graduate Colleges and served as the President at Shyamsunder College of Burdwan. He also acted as member of Executive Councils and Courts of different Universities. He actively participates in different U.G. and P.G. Councils/Boards of Studies for preparing & revising course curricula and suggesting examination reforms. He regularly evaluates Ph.D. theses, reviews research articles and performs examination related usual activities. He is also regularly deployed to perform confidential activities of the Govt. of India at New Delhi and also of different State Governments.
In regard to his academic records he completed his Ph.D.[ 1998] work in Agricultual Economics from Vidyasagar University. He stood First in First Class (Gold Medalist) in M.A. [ 1979] in Economics from the University of Burdwan, Burdwan and also he was a rank holder both in B.A. (Honours) [ 1977] in Economics and in school leaving examination. Apart from authoring a number of books, more than 100 research articles have been published by him in different national and international journals of repute. He regularly participates national as well as international conferences/seminars, in some of which he has delivered keynote address and acted as chairperson. He also delivered invited talks, acted as visiting professor and attended faculty development programmes and workshops as resource person. A good number of research scholars (exactly 18) have successfully completed their Ph.D. theses under his supervision. Currently six Ph.D. scholars are pursuing their research work under his supervision. He also supervised a good number of M.Phil. scholars in their dissertation work. He has successfully completed a good number of research projects funded by the U.G.C., UNDP and State Government.
